Mr Hopkins' Phonics group can use the spellings and games below for their sound of the week which the suffix 'er', 'est' and 'y'.
When adding er, y and est you first need to figure out if the root words has a long sound or a short sound. If it has a short sound and it ends in a consonant then you need to double the last letter and then add the suffix. If it a long sound then you do not need to double the last letter. Play the long and short vowel game as this will allow the children to realise which is which. Then have a go at the second game.
