SEND and Inclusion

SEND and Inclusion at St. Mary’s

At St. Mary’s, we believe every child is uniquely created in the image of God and deserves to flourish academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. We are a fully inclusive school where every child is welcome, valued, and supported.

We are committed to ensuring that all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), receive equal access to a high-quality, ambitious curriculum and are empowered to reach their God-given potential.

What is SEND?

SEND stands for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. A child may have SEND if they have greater difficulty in learning than others the same age or if they have a disability which makes it harder to access education.

We support pupils with a wide range of needs, including:

  • Communication and interaction
  • Cognition and learning
  • Social, emotional and mental health
  • Sensory and/or physical needs

Our Approach to Inclusion

  • We follow the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and Equality Act (2010).
  • We work in close partnership with parents, carers, and external agencies.
  • We make reasonable adjustments to ensure pupils can access learning and the wider life of the school.
  • Pupils’ needs are identified early and support is tailored through a graduated response.

Inclusive Curriculum

  • Our curriculum is adapted to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring they can access and achieve alongside their peers.
  • We use evidence-informed strategies, such as scaffolding, pre-teaching, retrieval practice, and visual supports, as recommended by the EEF.
  • Where necessary, we provide intervention groups or 1:1 support, but always aim to maximise inclusion in the classroom.

Working with Families

We believe parents are our most valuable partners. We:

  • Involve families in every step of the SEND process
  • Offer regular review meetings and termly updates
  • Signpost families to external support and local services
